Smoke hatches for industrial halls – Useful information

In the following we will find out why we need smoke exhaust systems, fire detection systems, what is a smoke hatches, how to use it and how to easier evacuate smoke from warehouses or industrial halls.

We all want the workplace to be a comfortable and safe environment, to offer benefits and pleasure during working hours, regardless of the field of activity provided. For this to be achievable, physical security at the workplacemust be also taken in to account. In turn, it must comply with local and European operating standards.

For example, for the industrial hall administrators as well as their employees, these aspects are fundamental. The coverage area and the level of detail of a risk assessment should always respect the severity and likelihood of occupational risks.

Smoke hatches – What should we know?

Smoke hatchesoffer solutions forsmoke removal with a natural-organizedcirculation, using air inlets (see here P118 / 2-2013 normative) and smoke and hot gas exhaust systems mounted on roofs and on exterior side walls. An imperative detail necessary for the safe operation of industrial halls is the installation of smoke hatches.

A well-designed ventilation system must maintain adequate smoke evacuation conditions, in order to provide in the event of fire minimal risk of inhalation, injury or even death of persons inside.

These are components of ventilation, smoke exhaust and hot gases that provide safety for industrial hall buildings in case of fire. They can add value to the halls or warehouses by special design and obtaining natural light throughout the day.

Smoke exhaust systems. Types of smoke hatches:

  • Electric smoke hatches – they have as opening mechanism a 24V powered electric actuator.
  • Pneumatic smoke hatches – they have as opening mechanism a pneumatic piston that is driven by gas (CO2). The opening can be done with pneumatic impulse, by route copper pipe and CO bottle and / and with electrical impulse (24V).
  • Pyrotechnic smoke hatches – have the mechanism of opening a metal shaft inserted into a sheath at the base of which an explosive charge is mounted. The opening can be done with pneumatic impulse, by route copper pipe and CO bottle and / and with electrical impulse (24V).

Advantages of installing a Smoke Exhaust Systems in industrial halls:

 Evacuation by providing smoke-free routes;

  • Reduces the probability of damage or loss of production and / or stocks;
  • It allows firefighters to see the fire better, and therefore to extinguish it quickly and efficiently;
  • It allows to design a greater distances until the exits, without the need for splitting the entire location, which leads to a bigger or more open construction plan;
  • Provides ventilation and natural light, very important when working in an enclosed space.

Industrial halls equipped with smoke exhaust and fire protection systems benefit from a much shorter smoke evacuation.

  • Smoke barriers limit the spread of smoke to the roof
  • The exhaust holes manage the smoke from the building to the outside
  • The inlet holes allow the replacement air to enter the building
  • Smoke traps ensure optimum ventilation, being a very important solution in the process of smoke exhaust.

The natural ventilation of the smoke not only creates safety and security for the users of the halls, this also offers the possibility of comfort ventilation. The facade or roof openings can be ventilated every day to provide a pleasant indoor climate.
